Case studies: Microsoft

Introduction

The Microsoft Campus situated at Thames Valley Park comprises of four large multi-story buildings each having a separate plant room. Service Management is provided in house by the Mitie Group (Services & Support Company)
Jim Ellison, Microsoft Facilities Manager and Paul Gregory, Manager for the Mitie Group were both concerned that while maintaining comfort levels they were experiencing increasing levels of fuel usage and excessive wear and tear on the boilers. This in turn also had the effect of increasing CO² emissions into the atmosphere.

Implementation

Following MK Energy's initial surveys and reports it was decided to run trails over a period of 30 days to determine what reduction level could be achieved. MK 5-- Systems were installed in the four plant rooms and the fuel usage monitored over the month by both MK Energy's Engineers and Mitie Service Engineers. During the trials particular attention was given to maintaining the comfort levels while reducing the gas usage.

Results

The results of the trials were satisfactory.
The MK systems had achieved a combined average of over 30% reduction in gas usage. Jim Ellison was extremely impressed with the performance of the MK systems. An added bonus was the installation of the self monitoring facility, which as Paul Gregory said would now allow Mitie Service Engineers to monitor the usage on a monthly basis so as to ensure that they are well within their budgets.

"There is now far less wear and tear on the boilers and this will also reduce our service times". Paul Gregory (Services Manager, Mitie Group - Services & Support Company)

Conclusion

Jim Ellison, Facilities & Services Manager - Microsoft continues..

"We at Microsoft are both impressed and extremely pleased with the performance of the MK systems and MK Energy as a company. We are in the process of implementing Global installations of these systems and look forward to long term relationship with MK Energy".
